Erectile Dysfunction. Problem of the New Age

by Max Alan

Inability to achieve and maintain an erection during a sexual intercourse long enough to get sexual satisfaction is known as Erectile Dysfunction(ED) or Impotency. It's necessary to understand the mechanism of erection occurring. Erection is a responding reaction to sexual stimulation. Brain sends a signal to the penis via nerves. Sexual stimulation may be of physical or mental origin. After the signal is received, the blood flows into a penis and is hold in it by blood vessels. Erection is over when the blood is released after the end of stimulation.

Statistics shows that more that 18% of men of the earth in the age above 20 suffer from ED or Impotency in different degree. But the majority of these men lead a sedentary life associated with poor diet, little or no physical work, didn't go in for sports, did no exercises at all. Most of them spend the majority of their time watching TV or using PC. Recent researches show a strong link between a lifestyle of men and their ability to achieve and hold an erection. People in the age above 40 suffer from ED mostly due to health problems, but their lifestyle is important as well. For example, diabetes and high blood pressure may result in Impotency. Different factors, like anxiety, depression or physical and nervous exhaustion may cause a so called psychological depression.

It's not difficult for a good doctor do diagnose erectile dysfunction studying patient history. The nature of the dysfunction and its degree should be found individually for each patient, concerning his social state, lifestyle, profession, mental and moral state. For instance, if the penis is not sensitive to touch and erection doesn't occur, then most probably the dysfunction is of a psychic origin. Sometimes it happens that ED is a result of disbalanced endocrine system. It can be monitored by the abnormality of the secondary sex characters. Sometimes, defects of the penis or venereal diseases may cause erectile dysfunction as well. Monitoring of nocturnal erections is also a good way to understand the origin of ED. If normal erections do not occur during sleep then it is more likely the problem of the psychic origin or a reason of weak blood vessels.

Different types of ED are treated accordingly. ED of physical origin that could be caused by diabetes, hypertension and obesity is treated by changes in lifestyle and other means, such as: cutting down on alcohol, quitting smoking, loosing excessive weight and increasing physical. Counseling and different behavioral techniques help to defeat ED caused by psychological factors. As psychological ED is usually caused by anxiety, learning the technique of self control may come in handy as well.

There are a lot of different drugs that are used to treat erectile dysfunction. Usually they are taken orally. Some drugs are injected into the urethra or directly into the penis. These drugs work by helping in the penile smooth muscle relaxation thus increasing the blood flow into the penis. It strengthens the erection and lets it to last for hours.

Why Do Some Men Not Get An Erection?

by John Roberts

Erectile dysfunction refers to the inability of a male to get and/or maintain an erection, which regularly leads to poor sex. This eventually causes more issues such as low self esteem, low confidence and even the avoidance from sexual situations.

What is the Cause of Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is most often caused by a physical disorder, which in turn causes abnormal blood flow to the penis. When blood flow to the penis is obstructed, erection problems may arise. Some of the medical conditions that may cause erection problems include:

High cholesterol
Parkinson's disease
High blood pressure
Multiple Sclerosis
Atherosclerosis
Thyroid problems
There are also psychological issues that may cause a man to have erectile dysfunction such as:

Andropause
Anxiety
Depression
There is a chance of developing erectile dysfunction if a man has one or more of these problems. This can be very distressing for a man to deal with because of the increased burden it brings on top of whatever problems he is facing in his life. One thing a lot of men don't know is that there are many treatment methods available and erectile dysfunction usually can be treated with the right treatment.

How May I Cure Erectile Dysfunction?

Penile implants - In cases where oral medications haven't helped, then penile implants can help a man get an erection. There are a few variations of penile implants, ranging from a solitary splint like object to a more complicated pump and reservoir model. The latter is more comfortable because the penis is able to be flaccid when a man is not aroused.

Oral medications - This is probably one of the easiest and most effective ways to treat erection problems. A patient will be prescribed with pills after consulting a doctor. These pills have to be taken prior to sex, which allows them to have a harder and longer lasting erection. The common ones include Levitra and Viagra.

Penis injections - For some situations, penis injections are recommended. Men can apply the injections themselves and the majority of report that they are only a little bit painful. A needle will be inserted into the side of the penis and medication will be pumped in, which will help the man get an erection and maintain it from thirty minutes to a few hours.

It is important for men to understand that they don't have to suffer in silence. Out of embarrassment, many men resist consulting a doctor and would rather to deal with the issue alone. This drives a lot of men to try to obtain illegal erection pills on the internet, which could lead to cataclysmic health problems if he consumes a counterfeit product or too much of it.

Causes And Risk Factors Of Erectile Dysfunction

Submitted By: Tom Whitmall

When it comes to determining the causes and risk factors of erectile dysfunction, commonly referred to as impotence, it is important to understand that there are often both physical and non-physical causes. It should also be stated that many men will encounter the condition at some point throughout their life and this may be normal and not a cause to seek a cure for erectile dysfunction. However, if dysfunction seems to be prolonged, then you should seek the advice of your health care professional to determine the cause. Some of the most common causes and risk factors that are attributed to erectile dysfunction are listed below.

The first area to look at when determining the cause of erectile dysfunction is substance abuse. Substance abuse can lead to impotence and there are a number of drugs that will increase a man's risk of becoming impotent.

Illegal drugs such as cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and steroids can all lead to dysfunction. Legal substances such as tobacco (cigarette smoking) and alcohol can be a direct cause of dysfunction as well. Many people are often surprised to realize that smoking is directly linked to the condition, but the effects of smoking can be devastating to a man's sexual health. The first step to address when reducing the risk factors of developing erectile dysfunction is to ensure that you have a healthy lifestyle free from substance abuse, smoking, and excessive use of alcohol. You should also ensure that your lifestyle is energetic and has plenty of physical activities to ensure the best possible health.

The next area to look at when determining the cause and risk factors of erectile dysfunction is the emotional or psychological area. Factors such as stress, anxiety, depression, and negative feelings towards the sexual partner may contribute to erectile dysfunction. Communication is a great tool to ensure that your relationship with your partner remains healthy and vibrant. Sometimes it may be necessary to seek counseling or the help of a therapist if anxiety or stress is determined to be the cause of the dysfunction.

Illegal substances don't only cause dysfunction. In fact, another common cause of erectile dysfunction is prescription medication. There are a number of commonly prescribed medications that contribute to dysfunction. Some of these include:

· Diphenhydramine
· Benztropine
· Atropine
· Cimetidine
· Digoxin

Because of the number of different medications that may be the root cause of erectile dysfunction, ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any new medications and begin to experience dysfunction. They will more than likely change your prescription or adjust your dosage.

Trauma, injury, or surgery to the pelvic area or region may also be the cause of erectile dysfunction. Sometimes, after a surgery or injury, nerves that extend to the penis may become damaged. This in turn results in dysfunction. It is important to let your health care professional know if you are experiencing any impotence after surgery or injury.

Finally, erectile dysfunction may be caused by another underlying medical condition. Diseases such as Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Hardening of the Arteries, and various Thyroid Conditions may be the underlying cause of impotence. Men are also at greater risk of developing erectile dysfunction as
they age.
